The Graduate 01:38
The pains you’ll take The rules you’ll break Just to keep from feeling older An acute sense that it’s over Still won’t cover your student loans Your credit cards Brought you far Or was it only deeper? You tried sleeping with your best friend Now your best friend’s with someone else Had I known someone like you Had I half the charm you do I’d have done the same thing, too An attitude Sad as untrue The endless solitude of summer With ever letter to each other We write every wrong we’ve ever known A set of stares A godless prayer And the space that lies between you And though there is no smoke to see through I still wonder who you are Had I known someone like you Had I half the charm you do I’d have done the same thing, too

Summer Song 03:47
Hold your coat On the cold face of a clock Summer floats As she talks There’s no map To the beach beneath the street Summer’s back Incomplete The touch of her hand The choler of love I can’t understand And I can’t get enough Detour days Sun diverted to the night Summer plays At a life Streetlights yawn Throwing shadows in her smile Summer’s song For a little while The touch of her hand The collar of love I can’t understand And I can’t get enough All the thoughts she treasures Her semi-precious stones Arrayed with elegant measure Displayed when she’s all alone Hide your smile On the dark side of the sun Summer sparks Your smart remarks Summer sparks and then she’s gone Summer sparks and then she’s gone Summer sparks and then she’s gone Summer sparks…

You and I 03:05
You and I Have no need for a name No need for a singular truth No need for these trivial things Our needs are both one and the same And that’s why we cry I hunger for your wonderful games The play and the pull of your eyes You and I Have our own little thing A secret language we share A silent song that we sing A love poem that’s tapped out in code So no one can tell I hunger for your wonderful games The play and the pull of your spell You and I Are not what we seem Unbound from any sense of ourselves The soft melancholy of dreams We both want to come in from the cold In each others arms I hunger for your wonderful games The play and the pull of your charms

The Rebel 02:16
Say no Say no and say no well Say no Say no and give them hell Say no And so assert yourself There is a power to the word When you say no The unjust cower to the word When you say no A no Won’t go all by itself A no Knows there’s a yes as well Say no Say yes to something else There is a power When there is a yes in no The unjust cower When there is a yes in no Be brave For all that you have fought Be brave Don’t be what you’ve been taught Be brave And be just what they’re not There is a power to the word When you say no The unjust cower to the word When you say no Be brave When you meet no success Be brave As you face imminent death Be brave And as the sun will set There is a power to the word When you say no The unjust cower to the word When you say no

Cicatriz 02:49
Glide across the stage Words drip off the page Lines worth ridiculing Who do you think you’re fooling, Besides yourself? Eyes as bright as swords Scars your dark awards Accidents of schooling Who do you think you’re fooling, Besides yourself? Let the line slip from your hand Change in time, a change in plans In the light you looked so beautiful Who will stage your curtain call now? Hide behind dark shades Live asleep for days Heated thoughts need cooling Who do you think you’re fooling, Besides yourself?

Begin Again 02:55
A fond farewell Not overdue, but just as well It’s time to shake The bonds that bind you To these streets To the night This thirst for life The correlate of finite time You let grow Now it consumes you And you’re lost To the premise To the promise of it all I pretend to nothing innocent Just think of all the wasted days you’ve spent Tending to the needs You never really needed To begin To live again She wants you to begin Her calling card The city streets in her backyard She lights you up Like strange pachinko And you’re lost To the premise To the promise of it all I pretend to nothing innocent Just think of all the wasted days you’ve spent Tending to the needs You never really needed To begin To live again She wants you to begin

Happiness 01:58
Happiness will find you When you least expect It will sneak behind you Wrap its fingers around your neck With broad, cheery grip start tightening All your blues turn purple-red And you might have wished for something else But happiness comes instead Happiness will haunt you Even in your sleep It will tease and taunt you Turning pratfalls while you weep Its vicious vine keeps growing Across the wall it creeps And you might have thought you’d sewn something else But happiness is what you reap All hail happiness That fair and winsome maid What would we give for That feeling we live for? The warmth of the light on the stage All hail happiness Fall down on your knees As soon as you’ve crossed it You’ve stumbled and lost it It flitters away in the breeze

Falling Snow 02:44
Will she return? Is she gone forever? Frost on the tree Snow-bent frozen branches Which ring is real? Which is just the image? Think, you can feel Thank her when you’re finished … A fountain overflows A garden goes unweeded I miss her touch All I ever needed
9.
In the photo of my mother as a child In the photo of the man Who was condemned to die, We all likewise In the treble bleeding from her ears that night In the treble bleeding from The only look of love She could not hide All my friends are dead All my friends are dead In the pages of the books that bare your voice In the pages of the books That are washed with loss and pain Your wounded mind At the loss of authorship of her own life At the loss of access to The last stacks where it might reside She fights the urge to cry All my friends are dead All my friends are dead You’re making time You’ve crossed a line She’s making signs That will rip you heart apart
10.
Automaton 02:32
Your head a rock Your heart a hollow stone Formaldehyde inside The tiny bitter eyes you call your own Automaton Who switched you on? Tick, tick, whir, and click Your cyclic song Fish for your hands Cripple wheels your feet A deathless stare proves no one’s there And still breathlessly, I believe Automaton Who switched you on? Tick, tick, whir, and click Your cyclic song … Your burlesque soul The gears beneath your robe As much you whir, you’ll never be You’ll just rust, you must corrode Automaton Who switched you on? Tick, tick, whir, and click Your Tick, tick, whir, and Tick, tick, whir, and click Your cyclic song

Home 03:46
Home Anywhere you lay your head a home Even as you wander lost, alone Far beyond the fields of the unknown Anywhere you wonder Home A familiar feeling in your bones A peculiar dream becomes your tissue And says, “I miss you.” I want to be with you Everywhere you go I want to seep through the ether Or melt like snow I want to be with you Everywhere you go I want to seep through the either/or, Melt like snow Time The calculated strangeness of your mind Souvenirs and sheets you’ve left behind Memories that melt with rain and die Little bits of paper Time Ruined like the column of your spine A peculiar dream becomes your tissue And says, “I miss you.” I want to be with you Everywhere you go I want to seep through the ether Or melt like snow I want to be with you Everywhere you go I want to seep through the either/or, Melt like snow

about

BEGIN AGAIN was recorded in 2013, on the eve of Mark's move from his longtime home in NYC to a boat in San Diego, CA. Recorded in just one afternoon—and steeped in the intent camaraderie of friends and family—it is as much a 'farewell album' as a warm salutation and eager declaration to BEGIN AGAIN.
